A Turning Point in History - The Invention of Walmart
Sam Walton was an average, everyday American living in rural Arkansas. He, like many others during that time, had a dream, as well as the courage and confidence to pursue it. Walton got one of his first real jobs at JCPenney, and found he enjoyed working in retail. Later, he decided to begin experimenting with discount stores and always considering ways to improve. Through a series of struggles, Sam became the proud owner of what is today the most widely known and successful discount store, Walmart. Along the way, he reached many billion dollars in sales and was named "the richest man in America" by Forbes in 1985. Walton also built a good relationship with his customers by guaranteeing their satisfaction and ensuring them they were getting the best deals around. Through fierce determination, Sam Walton achieved great success, as well as changing the course of history.
Sam was one of the first to use self-service in his stores. He found he could sell more of something if he gave customers a great deal. Walton even showed people there were lots of potential sales in rural areas. Sam Walton changed stores across the globe, the way stores promote products, and affected where and how we shop. He has had an impact on our history and continues to impact us today.
